abstract

abstract objective: shallots are important part of the diet for many people and there is long-held belief in their health enhancing properties. the aim of this study was to determine antifungal activity of shallot against reference fungal strains. methods: alcoholic and aqueous extracts of shallot (allium hirtifolium) were tested for in vitro antifungal activities against aspergillus fumigatus, aspergillus flavus, aspergillus niger, penicillium gryseogenum, alternaria, microsporum canis and trichophyton mentagrophytes. the minimal inhibitory concentration (mic) was determined using broth macrodilution method. the effects of shallot extracts were also compared with those of miconazole. results: allium hirtifolium showed antifungal activity against all the fungi species tested with mic values ranging from 0.058 to 0.8 mg/ml for alcoholic extract and 0.26 to 3.84 mg/ml for aqueous extract. the minimum fungicidal concentration (mfc) of alcoholic and aqueous extracts ranged from 0.1 to 12.8 mg/ml and 0.6 to 68.26mg/ml, respectively. conclusions: the results indicate that crude juice of shallot has antifungal activity and might be promising, at least, in treatment of fungal-associated diseases from mentioned fungi.

In vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of Allium hirtifolium and Allium sativum

Objective: One of the major clinical problems is the resistance of Candida speciestowards most of antifungals. The search for new antifungal drug from plants have helped to overcome this problem. This study evaluated the effects of Allium hirtifolium and Allium sativumextracts on Candida tropicalis both in vitro and in a mouse model of systemic candidiasis. Materials and Methods: In this study,...

comparison of catalytic activity of heteropoly compounds in the synthesis of bis(indolyl)alkanes.

heteropoly acids (hpa) and their salts have advantages as catalysts which make them both economically and environmentally attractive, strong br?nsted acidity, exhibiting fast reversible multi-electron redox transformations under rather mild conditions, very high solubility in polar solvents, fairly high thermal stability in the solid states, and efficient oxidizing ability, so that they are imp...

In vitro Antifungal Activity of Biopolymeric Foam Activated with Carvacrol

Background: Active packaging represents a defining strategy to improve food quality and safety of the packaged foods. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro ability of commercial biopolymeric foams, namely Mater-Bi (MB), activated with 20% of carvacrol, to develop a completely biodegradable and compostable packaging to inhibit the growth of spoilage and pathogenic yeasts. Methods: MB foams,...

In vitro antifungal activity of Clotrimazole, Miconazole and Ketoconazol by binary mixture pattern against hospital isolates of Candida

The lack of variation in antifungal drugs, and the misuse or inappropriate use usually causes resistant strains of the yeast in human’s normal flora. Unfortunately, a large number of Candida infection cases in immunosuppressed patients with insufficient treatment eventually can cause patient's death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro conventional antifungal azole compounds with...

Saponins from Allium minutiflorum with antifungal activity.

Three saponins, named minutoside A (1), minutoside B (2), minutoside C (3), and two known sapogenins, alliogenin and neoagigenin, were isolated from the bulbs of Allium minutiflorum Regel. Elucidation of their structure was carried out by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The structures of the new compounds were identified as (25R)-furost...
